Sleep

Long ago, my men
slept in a troop ship,

Confederate & German
tangled in steerage,

Union & GI snug
in the topmost bunks.

I wore my father’s boots,
no matter blisters,

no matter stink. Heat raged
in our swamp, on our hill.

Each day, my men formed
& fell on train-table, dryer,

leaf-print rug. In the end,
the right ones won.

Then we slept again.
