Resolve

Clouds, a feathery stream.
Shiraz for you, for me
a twilit glass of Stella
Artois, crackers and
baba ghanoush, when out
of the woods they prove

the hour, one antler-
crowned, the other working
her flag, a gypsy pair
testing the air and our
resolve as they eye what’s
left of lilies and hostas,

the maple-hung suet.
We hold fast, our glasses
raised; I strike a match
that flares at the end
of a Muriel Coronella.
Snorting, the buck turns.
