To Each According to His Measures
The classical musicians make the most,
it seems, for judging from the coinage in
their cases, strains of Mozart, Bach, Chopin
and such rate well with those who hurry past
to take their trains. But other Metro gigs,
I guess, take in a fairly decent haul
as well—accordion, guitar, et al.—
cash money spent on decent meals and cigs,
or used perhaps to pay the rent. But what
of that old man with tattered clothes and hat,
whose notes on some harmonica, pitiably blown,
might conjure just enough compassion up
to have one lonely quarter lamely thrown
into his much-neglected paper cup?
